This paper seeks to expand research knowledge on democracy promotion activities in Asia. Currently several Asian governments are involved in democracy promotion initiatives at the international, regional and national level are underway. However, very little is known about the scope, range and effectiveness of such activities. This paper provides an initial overview of Asian governmental involvement in democracy promotion initiatives starting from the late 1980s. The research undertaken in the paper shows that the number of Asian governments involved in democracy promotion is small and their scope limited. The emerging trends point to a need to diversify and increase democracy promotion stakeholders in the region through the creation of an active Asian lobby. This article was written as part of my fellowship at Keio University, it will be published in the Keio Journal of Politics No. 14 in April 2009. |
